Writing Reference

Diana Hacker: Research and Documentation Online. Reference site that cover MLA, APA, Chicago and CBE styles. Hacker's handbooks are used in almost half of the colleges and universities in the United States. Her handbook, A Writer's Reference, is the preferred reference for all Project Seminar courses (and it just handy to have around).

Research Links

Stony Brook University Library Resources - access to electronic journals, research databases, the Stony Brook library catalog, individual library sites (including Music, Health Sciences, and Special Collections).

ScienceDirect - The State University of New York has purchased a three-year subscription to ScienceDirect, a site featuring more 700 scientific, technical, and medical journals (abstracts and full-text) in a searchable database. Faculty, students and staff of all SUNY institutions have access. One must be logged in to the campus network (either on-campus or dialed in to a campus server). When at the ScienceDirect home page, click on "group-wide login" for access. There should be no password prompt.

SUNY Connect - an easy, integrated site with access to all SUNY library catalogs, basic online reference tools and full-text databases, and library instruction, reference assistance, and document delivery services from a remote location

Suffolk County Libraries Portal - excellent site providing links to all Suffolk County local libraries, information on how to get free Internet access and email via suffolkweb and links to sites of interest to Suffolk County residents

New York Public Library

Cornell University Library Website Evaluation Criteria - well-organized site that provides guidelines for evaluation the quality of information on a website

All Bookstores - a bot crawler site that allows users to search for textbooks by author name, title or ISBN - site searches through other textbook sellers' sites and offers a comprehensive list of sellers who have the text, pricing and shipping information, new/used status, and applicable sales tax - also provides links to purchase
