Call for Nominations
March 2007
Dear Colleagues:
Each spring the Arts & Sciences Senate holds general elections to fill vacancies, both on its standing committees, and for Senators At-Large.
The Arts & Sciences Senate represents the interests of the academic departments affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences, the Marine Sciences Research Center, and the West Campus Library. The Arts & Sciences Senate is responsible for providing specific advice and oversight in areas of curriculum, academic judiciary, faculty promotion and tenure, students, academic standing, and faculty rights and responsibilities.
The five standing committees of the Arts & Sciences Senate directly oversee the Curriculum, the Academic Judiciary, Faculty Promotion and Tenure, Students, Academic Standing, and Faculty Rights and Responsibilities.
At-Large Senators participate in the general meetings of the Arts & Sciences Senate, and also represent the interests and concerns of their constituencies at general University Senate meetings. The Senate provides significant input into university decision-making through direct meetings with members of the administration and through representation on the University Senate. For further information, see the Arts & Sciences Senate website, http://ws.cc.sunysb.edu/senatecas/
Terms on the committees of the Arts & Sciences Senate are for three years, with exceptions for a non-tenured tenure track faculty members on the Promotion and Tenure and Faculty Rights and Responsibilities Policies Committee. Positions are filled according to discipline, so that there is equal representation among the Humanities & Fine Arts, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics on each committee. There are currently openings on each of the Arts & Sciences Senate Committees for members in the following areas:
Academic Judiciary Committee: Humanities & Fine Arts (one), Natural Sciences & Mathematics (two) and Social and Behavioral Sciences (two)
Committee on Academic Standing and Appeals: Humanities and Fine Arts (one); Natural Sciences and Mathematics (one)
Curriculum Committee: Humanities & Fine Arts (one); Natural Sciences & Mathematics (two) and Social and Behavioral Sciences (one)
Faculty Rights and Responsibilities Policies Committee: Humanities & Fine Arts (one), and Natural Sciences & Math (one)
Promotion and Tenure Committee: Humanities & Fine Arts (one), Natural Sciences and Mathematics (one), Social and Behavioral Sciences (one) and Non-Tenure Faculty (one for a one-year term)
There will be seventeen vacant At-Large faculty Senator (7 HFA, 5 NSM and 5 SBS) seats. At-Large Senators are elected for three year terms.
Please consider placing your name on the ballot for one or more of these positions. For example, you may serve as an At-Large faculty Senator and also be a committee member. Nominations of friends and colleagues are welcome. However, please check with the person that you nominate to make sure that he/she will be willing to serve if elected. Elections will take place in April using the Stony Brook Solar System website.
Please email Laurie Theobalt, the secretary in the Senate Office at LTheobalt@notes.cc.sunysb.edu with your nominations prior to 5:00 PM on Wednesday, April 4th, 2007.
Sincerely,
Georges Fouron, President, Arts & Sciences Senate
