How do you go about selecting which schools to apply to?
Don't limit yourself! The student who says "I am only applying to medical schools on Long Island," or , "I refuse to attend a dental school that is west of Suffolk County," is probably making a HUGE mistake in their application strategy. Look at schools throughout New York State--also in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington, DC.
Avoid casting your net too wide! For you, as a New Yorker, it could be counter-productive to apply to a large number of West Coast schools. Count up the number of schools you are applying to and figure out all the fees you will have to pay. Nobody wants to apply to a huge number of schools initially only to find out that the time or money to complete all those applications is lacking.
