Time Management
Making the most of your time!
Becoming a successful student requires one to manage time wisely and effectively. The
following are some suggestions on how to avoid wasting time and tips on managing it so
that it works to your advantage.
Be aware of when your mind and body work best and make use of that time. Get
your most demanding tasks done when your energy is at its peak.
Avoid distractions. When you choose a place to study, keep only the essentials there
(i.e., no TV, radio, CD player, or telephone).
Plan ahead. Have a calendar that you carry with you all the time.
Review all the tasks you have to tend to and then work on a hierarchy of the time
you will need for each one.
Plan on two to three hours of study time for each hour you spend in class.
Try to study the most difficult subjects (or ones you find least interesting) first and
reward yourself at the end with the easiest or most interesting material. Also, try to
study in short sessions rather than “marathon” studying.
Learn to say no. If you are studying and someone offers you a distraction, make sure
that you finish your assignment first. Reward yourself later.
Wisely use the time between classes. If you have a few minutes, review your notes
from your last class or preview upcoming assignments.
When you are done with everything you planned for the day, ask yourself if you are
too tired to do just one more thing. If not, take out another assignment and get
started with it. This will buy you time for the future.
Here are some time scheduling suggestions, courtesy of the Cook Counseling Center
at Virginia Tech: Long Term Schedule-
Construct a schedule of your fixed commitments only.
These include only obligations you are required to meet every week, e.g., job hours,
classes, religious observation, organization meetings, etc.
Intermediate Schedule-
One per week. Now make a short list of MAJOR
EVENTS and AMOUNT OF WORK to be accomplished in each subject this week.
This may include non-study activities.
Example:
Quiz Wednesday
Paper Tuesday
Ball game Tuesday night
Finish 40 pages in English by Friday
Finish 150 pages in History by Friday
