Letter to Junior Class
Dear Junior:Welcome to your junior year at Stony Brook University! If you have earned 57 to 84 credits, you have achieved junior standing. If you would like to see an advisor, please call the Academic and Pre-Professional Advising Center at (631) 632-7082. You may then ask to make an appointment with either Ellen Hopkins or Neil Buffett, who will gladly assist you as you plan your last two years of undergraduate career.
As you begin your junior year, keep in mind that your junior cohort is not unique from any other class as to what they should be thinking about and doing – such as talking with faculty members, declaring a major (or changing majors), seeking an internship, writing a resume, and reviewing graduation requirements. Regardless of whether you are a continuing student or a new transfer student, you will notice that junior year courses require you to perform at a higher level academically. However, having completed two years at Stony Brook, or college-level work elsewhere, you are prepared for the tasks you will be given. At the close of this year you can expect to have developed a more meaningful, and fulfilling academic plan, which will have prepared you for the senior year and beyond. In addition to seeking academic advice, you should plan to attend the various information programs and presentations hosted by the Academic Advising staff, including “The Major Event” and the “Graduate School Forum.” The “Major Event,” which is held every November during “Major Decisions Week,” offers you the opportunity to speak with faculty about all the majors, minors, and special programs – including study abroad and fellowships –available at Stony Brook. For those of you considering graduate school, the “Graduate School Forum” will offer you some valuable tips and insights about your graduate school options. This event is held every October and features a captivating presentation by Dr. Lawrence Martin, Dean of the Stony Brook University Graduate School.
In order to prepare you for a successful junior year, make sure to continually check the Academic and Pre-Professional Advising Center’s website for news and events that may be of special interest to you. Please feel free to make an appointment to see us in order to discuss any academic concerns you may have.
Sincerely,
|
