
Goal Setting
I. Goals must be well defined and attainable
Goals can:
· Help you allocate Time for important activities
· Improve your Test preparation and Study skills
· Help Reduce Stress due to academics
· Improve your problem identification and problem solving skills
II. Characteristics of Good Goals
· Balance
· Basing them on your Priorities
· Being Positive
· Being specific and clear
· Being able to visualize the results
III. Good vs. Bad Goal:
Examples of Bad Goals
· I will study 5 hours every day
· I will go to the library every weekend
Examples of Good Goals
· I will study one hour 5 times this week
· I will go to the library one weekend per month
IV. Long & Short Term Goals
· Long-term goals-
Are goals that you will achieve over a longer period of time (e.g., one semester, one year, five years, or twenty years).
· Short-term goals-
Are goals that you will achieve in the near future (e.g., in a day, within a week, or possibly within a few months).
Planning ahead helps you to get things done. In setting goals, you are programming yourself for success. You are taking a positive step toward controlling the outcome of your life. Think about what you would like to accomplish and then answer these questions.
